Question: Open Toe Shoes with Hose/Tights

Thursday, January 13, 2011

My adorable Dad posed a fashion question to me from a co-worker because he says I'm a professional. (How sweet is that??) Although I'm flattered and definitely have an opinion I don't necessarily consider myself the expert so I thought I'd defer to you fabulous people so we could offer up tons of opinions!  (Another reason I love blogging, instant answers.)

The question is: what does the fashion world think of open toe shoes with hose/panty hose? Also hose/panty hose with open heel shoes?

To get us started, here's what's I think, please add/advise as you see fit! Thanks stylista's, can't wait to hear what you have to say!

Open toe shoes
Tricky....for me, the issue is hose versus tights - otherwise known as sheer versus opaque. Panty hose in any sheer form are in my opinion, a no-no: the seam at the toe screams 'ick'. However, tights with open toe shoes are usually fine based on the actual openness of the shoe. I go with the half rule, if more than 50% of your foot is showing (minus the top portion of your foot that usually always shows), tights not necessary. (Example, strap-y sandal, cut-out slip ons, etc.) But if it's a peep platform, cut-out bootie or bare back clog, I say go for it!

 Open heel shoes
Pending the type of shoe (discussed above) and proper seasonality of it, this is acceptable in most cases.

P.S. The picture above is my feet in the fall, wearing navy tights and brown leather open toes. I heart those Aldo shoes and can't wait to be reunited in the spring. *sigh*

  1. I'm with you. I'm into it as long as there isn't a seam at the toe!

  2. I agree, opaque is a go sheer is a big no-no! I see people doing the sheer pantyhose with open toes all the time and I really can't stand it. Even when there isn't a line (or better to say it is strategically hidden) you can still tell those toes are in hose. Ick.

  3. A toe seam is a HUGE no-no in my book! I personally feel silly wearing open toed shoes with tights, but I love the look on others!

  4. I've never actually tried it myself but I think it's fine as long as its done properly (along the lines you discussed).

and i like open toe shoes with opaque tights! usually with black to tell you the truth!
i had never thought of open heel shoes with tights, but it doesn't sound as a "don't" to me!
and i looks good the way you pulled it off.

  7. I totally agree with the half rule, and opaque tights only. It's a seam thing for me.

    CUTE Aldos!

  8. I've never done it myself but I like the look of a bright colored tight paired with open-toed shoes, but it has to work together. Ew to sheer. Yay to magenta tights paired with cute shoes.

  9. So it seems that seams are an issue :)

  10. Opaque all the way, baby. No sheer unless you're over 80 and then it's ok because you really just don't care at that point - and righteously, so. And I would agree with Mo Pie...colored tights make it all even better. But I do love rockin' tights with open shoes. You get much more mileage out of your investment and you can create a whole new look!

  11. Hmmm I don't know either...I think sometimes it can look cute, depending on the whole outfit, but sometimes not good at all!!!

  13. I ususally don't wear tights or nylons, but that's becuase I live in SoCal and it doesn't get that cold here. But, just in my opinion, I'd say neither with open toed unless the tights are dark and blend well like your picture above :)

    Thanks for visiting my blog!

  14. I tend to agree with you on a general basis but sometimes, depending on the shoe and outfit, I would be more tolerant of certain practices... sometimes certain girls can pull-off outfits that I wouldn't dare. Complicated matter :-)

  15. I was just having this debate with myself in Target. I bought the panty hose, tried them on with my open toed shoes and just couldn't do it. And they were seamless. To each their own!! :)

  16. I totally agree with you. I would never wear open-toe shoes with hose, but wear them all the time with black tights.

    Great post and Happy Monday!

  17. Right now, and this has been going on from the summer, socks and hose go together uber well with open toe and sandal footwear. I'd say that opaque is better. Go out there and try! Get crazy. Tell me if you liked, dear.

  18. I'm not big on open toes or open heels when it comes to shoes, but I think with the right amount of confidence, you can make anything work.

  19. totally agree w/your suggestions, this topic should be the 11th commandment. Some chicks (usually older ladies)wear sheer hose w/flat sandals and shorts. God's Nightgown, its horrible to see. Bless their little hearts. I realize it could be a medical issue at times, but AT LEAST wear a skirt. I sound harsh, but its always been a 'pet peeve' w/me. Another one is ill-fitted bras w/straps showing. YUCK
How about an article on bra fitting and does/don't? luv insights from you & readers.

  23. I drop a leave a response when I like a article on a website or
I have something to add to the discussion. Usually it's a result of the sincerness displayed in the article I looked at. And after this article "Question: Open Toe Shoes with Hose/Tights". I was excited enough to drop a thought ;) I actually do have a couple of questions for you if it's allright.

Could it be just me or does it look like like a few of these
remarks come across like they are left by brain dead individuals?
:-P And, if you are writing at other online sites, I would like to keep up
