Non Diamond Engagement Rings

The news of Prince William proposing to Kate with Diana's gorgeous sapphire engagement ring got me all excited about this potentially becoming a trend. (Jessica just got a ruby!) I love the idea of wearing something other than a diamond. Though they're beautiful, I've never understood why that was the chosen stone to represent love and marriage. (I'm sure there's a reason, I'm just too lazy to Google it.)  Eight years ago I swooned over a sapphire not knowing it would become my engagement ring just a short while later. A few times at the beginning I wondered if it would be alright for the rest of my life, blending with my wardrobe or standing out like a sore thumb. But it quickly became me and not once did I regret that it wasn't a diamond. I still find myself gazing at it and love that it represents Alex's birthstone (though not why we chose it). People often ask if it's my wedding ring and I get to feel like a newlywed again and again when I tell them yes, I can't imagine wearing anything else. Though... I don't think I'd mind an emerald for our 10 year ;)

What about you, do you have a non diamond or would you be up for it? Do you think colored stones will catch on??

  4. I think it would be beautiful to have a non-diamond ring but I do love my diamond one. It's not too big or goddy or flashy or anythign so it suits me. But I can imagine the possibilities! The sapphire ring he gave her is so beautiful and I love that it was Princess Di's!

  5. And that is why I love you Erika - speaking the truth! :) :) :)

    Suki - that sounds lovely!

Mo Pie - isn't it amazing the amount of choices out there?? In diamonds alone it's incredible, then throwing other things in the mix - a guy or gal could go insane! At least there's truly something for everyone!

  7. I ADORE colored stone engagement rings! Truth be told I also adore diamond engagement rings, but I am a bit of a jewelry fiend so I pretty much love it all =) I have a diamond engagement ring but I definitely would have been up for a colored stone. My birthstone is sapphire so I am always coveting another one of those, and my husband's is emerald which I've always loved. I don't actually have any emerald jewelry I may have to do something about that.
And I am still completely swooning over Kate's ring, can you imagine getting to wear Princess Di's ring for the rest of your life? Yes please!

  8. I love it! Might as well pick something that is you. I have a diamond, but no wedding band and find myself looking for an alternative for an anniversary some day ;)

I can't wait for this wedding, those two are so cute!

  10. though i got a diamond, i was seriously torn between a stunning aquamarine ring i found at an antique store. the light blue is so mesmerizing and sometimes almost looks light enough to actually be a diamond.

  12. so a guy's perspective: if that day ever comes, the one thing i want is a diamond, but not the kind everyone else wants. i want a dark titanium claddagh ring with three small black diamonds bezel set flush into the heart. (i worked at state farm in fire claims buying diamonds for a year) no one wants them because they aren't see through and really cheap, but they are so awesome. they just look so sharp.

hopefully my wife wants one too.

  13. All of my friends seem to be getting identical engagement rings, so something different is starting to sound better and better. Your sapphire ring sounds gorgeous (especially with an emerald to go with it)! :)

  14. i think non-diamond rings are beautiful! i know technically it's still a diamond, but i would really love to have a yellow diamond engagement ring (in the far future...). a sapphire is also very beautiful. i like emeralds too. :D

  16. I absolutely love the idea of a non-traditional engagement ring, although I'd probably be the last person most of my family and friends would imagine in one! Diamonds have NOT always been the engagement ring center stone of choice, and I think other gems and even pearls make such beautiful rings!

  18. My birthstone is a diamond so I really DON'T like them. But I like the tradition of them in engagement rings so I think I'd want something with Sapphire/Emerald/Amethyst in it with small diamonds in the ring or something.

Kinda like hers only cheaper, haha.
